"Steak BBQ On A Budget" & A $25 Walmart Gift Card Giveaway

I was contacted earlier in the month asking if I'd like to try Walmart's new USDA Choice steaks.  Mr. H is a huge meat eater, so of course I said yes! Have you seen the commercials on TV where the people are dining in a steakhouse and a guy comes along telling them they've just eaten Walmart Steaks? Well these are those steaks!

I was given two $25 Walmart gift cards. One for me to create a "Steak BBQ On A Budget" and one to give away to a lucky reader! I went to Walmart and immediately spotted the USDA Choice steaks since they are easily identified by the black tray packaging.  There were several different cuts of meat to choose from, but Mr. H is partial to filet mignon, so that's what we got. My one complaint about the filets were that they were packaged individually rather than in pairs (like the rib eye steaks) so it was difficult finding two that were similar in size. I like to pan sear my steaks rather than putting them on a grill, so while the cooking times varied because one steak was larger than the other, it did not affect the flavor one bit.

The steaks were fresh and well trimmed and tasted like any others that I would get from the butcher counter at my local market only at a lower price point. The steaks we chose were $14.99/lb. We purchased two steaks, but ended up getting three servings out of them. In addition to the seared steaks, I made rosemary and garlic roasted potatoes and in lieu of a salad, I set out fresh veggies and dip. A fruit salad served as dessert. It was a perfect Summer meal and it was affordable. I spent just over the $25 limit because I got a little carried away with the fruit but if you think about it- a filet mignon steak dinner for three people under $25 is a great deal! It would be at least three times that at a restaurant.

I simply seasoned the steaks with salt and pepper and seared them in a super hot pan with a tad of butter until they were medium rare. I don't have a recipe for that, but I am sharing my favorite way to make roasted potatoes. These are delicious, if I say so myself :-)

Rosemary & Garlic Oven Roasted Potatoes from Monica h

  • 2 lbs. new potatoes, rinsed and patted dry
  • 3 Tbsp. olive oil
  • 1 sprig of fresh rosemary, finely minced
  • 3-4 clove of garlic, finely minced
  • 2-3 tsp. kosher salt
  • black pepper
Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with foil or parchment paper and set aside. If using foil, spray with non-stick cooking spray.

Cut your potatoes into 1 1/2-inch chunks. You want them to be all about the same size (quarter the smaller potatoes, cut the larger ones into 8 pieces). Place them in a large bowl and toss with olive oil, rosemary, garlic, salt and pepper.

Once the potatoes are well coated, place them on the prepared baking sheet in a single layer.

Place in oven and bake for 35-40 minutes, turning them with a spatula every 10-15 minutes, until uniformly golden and tender.

GIVEAWAY:  I have one $25 Walmart gift card for one lucky reader to purchase Walmart's USDA Choice Steaks so that you can create your own "Steak BBQ On A Budget". All you have to do is leave me a comment on this post telling me what your ideal steak dinner is. I want details- what kind of steak do you like, how do you like it cooked and what are your favorite sides?

I'll announce a winner later in the week. Good luck!

I love a good ribeye drizzled with a little olive oil, salt and pepper, and thyme. I'd probably buy a couple of those. Perfect sides are always potatoes, some sauteed mushrooms and a nice salad.

NY Strip with crumbled blue cheese & caramelized onions on top. Oh man I'm a sucker for blue cheese! For sides, a nice hunk of crusty Italian bread with olive oil for dipping, a nice glass of red wine, and sauteed green beans. I like my beans just barely cooked so they still have some crunch and sharp green color to them.

Yummy dinner! We love steak but don't eat it that often because it is so expensive, so I'll totally have to check Walmart out. As for my perfect steak dinner, a classic wedge salad with extra blue cheese crumbles, baked potato and a filet mignon or New York Strip cooked medium rare! Drool!

Unknown said...

Wow those potatoes look incredible!! I love potatoes. Especially with my meat. I'm a meat and potatoes gal :)

I just like meat. Steak is great, ribs are amazing, meat in general is just food sent from the gods! :) But it has to be cooked towards well-done. I don't mind a little pink in the middle, but if the thing is leaking blood, then no thank you.

Melly said...

I love a ribeye. I dry brine it with salt and sugar for 24 hours. Then grill it medium-rare. Baked potates with so much sourcream and cheese it is silly.

Amber said...

I love a T-bone hot off the grill! On the side, I love a soft roll that melts in your mouth and asparagus that has been wrapped in bacon! I also love funeral potatoes and a fresh salad that my mom makes with lettuce, avocado and tomato and the dressing is olive oil, garlic pepper, salt and lime juice!

Lynn Thompson said...

I am with Mr H. I love a filet mignon cooked medium on the grill and served up with mushrooms and onions which have been cooked with garlic, Worcestershire sauce and wine. I certainly think your potatoes would go nicely with my steak and I would add a serving of grilled asparagus. YUM!!

My husband prefers filets too. I like them but think ribeyes have more flavor. I prepare steaks similar to the way you do. Salt and pepper and pan sear each side about three minutes depending on thickness. Then I put the pan into a 400 degree oven for about five minutes and let rest ten minutes. I love roasted potatoes or twice baked potatoes and a salad with a steak. Any leftover steak goes into sandwiches or hash the next day or so.

Best,
Bonnie

I love flank steak that's been marinated in a teriyaki sauce and grilled. It's so yummy with mushroom rice, salad, green beans and fruit!

MaryB said...

I'd pick ribeye, grilled most likely. I like it medium rare with a pat of butter (decadent!) on top. Lots of salt and pepper, too. Some oven fries and a salad on the side. Oh, and maybe some mixed mushrooms. Wait...maybe mushroom risotto instead of oven fries. Hmmm, my mouth is watering!

Any steak from our grass fed 1/4 beef is good. The porter house, the rib eye, any! I love to grill them and I've really learned to love to leave them more med rare than I used to eat beef....seriously tender and just melts. Even my steak hating husband (I KNOW!) has come to love our steaks. And my little guy who turns 4 tomorrow (YIKES!) has requested steak and peas for his birthday dinner. We'll be eating it with some potato salad and a real strawberry cake with m&ms on it and his gold Thomas perched on top. The funny requests of a 4 year old :)

We always get ribeyes, season with salt and pepper and grill to medium. We don't indulge in steak often, but when we do I always go classic with a baked potato and corn on the cob.

We like a t-bone. I am happy with the tenderloin part and the bone, my husband gets the rest. We always grill it--just salt, pepper and garlic powder. In the summertime, I'll sometimes mince some herbs from the garden and a little onion and mix with butter to melt on top once it comes off the grill. And we LOVE our potatoes like your recipe!

Oh those roasted potatoes look fabulous!!! I love me a good filet mignon, medium rare. I love the ones from Outback because they have the perfect seasoning. I usually alternate between a loaded baked potato or a sweet potato with nothing but butter for the side. Oh, and the house salad with their spicy ranch. Mmmmmm....Outback...

I love a good medium rare filet mignon, lightly seasoned with salt & pepper and a dash of garlic. I also love to roll the sides in freshly ground black pepper. The best sides are either twice baked potatoes or potatoes au gratin with either roasted asparagus or wilted spinach. Thanks Monica!

What a fun giveaway, Monica! The whole plate looks so colorful-- and perfect. Just the way you are. Fillet mignon is my favorite choice steak when I want to make a special dinner for Craig. I use Ina Garten's method, which is fool-proof and perfect... seared in a cast-iron skillet (like you did), add butter on top and finish off in the oven. juice and flavorful! If I want to get fancy, I'll make a pepper sauce or a red wine reduction. Super impressive, and not a lot of work.
PS: Sorry, I didn't answer your birthday text to me. Thank you! The remodel on our house has made me far too busy, and now it's back to school. Miss you.

We love to marinate a London Broil in Italian dressing and beer for a few hours or overnight. The meat gets full of flavor and then we grill it on Med/low on our gas grill. One of our favorite sides to make is a cabbage cut into quarters and buttered then sprinkled with Bacon, salt, pepper and garlic then wrap each quarter in aluminum foil. Place on the top shelf of the grill and while your London broil cooks, your cabbage is steamed for about 15 minutes. Both a flavorful pairing :)

I'm not wonderful at cooking my own steaks, but one of the best I've had was at an outback steak house. The myriad of perppers they put on it is wonderful! I love pepper! I think a porterhouse would be my fave cut done to medium rare perfection. Bake a potato with a nice tossed salad and I'm good to go!

Stephanie said...

While it doesn't seem too fancy to me now, my favorite steak memories take me back to my mom cooking sirloin steaks on the grill. I know now that it was more economical for her to get those big sirloins and cut them in smaller pieces to feed the extended family. The meal included corn, green beans and tomatoes from my grandfather's garden, baked potatoes and garlic bread. Just thinking about the fun evenings surrounded by my family makes me wish for that perfect meal again... But I've never achieved it on my own grill. Thanks for triggering the great memories!

Hi, my favorite choice of steak is a ribeye because it is so juicy and full of flavor or fillet mignon because it is super tender. I normally pan sear my steaks in a cast iron skillet and season with salt and pepper. Severed along side a twice baked potato and a green salad with homemade ranch dressing. I have not yet tried the premium grade steaks from Walmart and would love to try them out. My husband is a steak lover and so am I! :-)

I'm a sucker for steak topped off with garlicky shrimp. Nothing fancy for the sides - some steamed veggies and a baked potato, usually, since the steak is by far the star for me. My husband's a huge filet fan, too - I might just have to give Walmart's brand a try. :)

My favorite steak dinner would be ribeye, which I like to season with Olice Oil, crushed garlic, and Montreal Steak Seasoning, I then like to grill it to medium on my gas grill. The perfect sides to this would be my famous Ranch twice baked potatoes with ranch powder, cheese, bacon, and chives, as well as some fresh grilled asparagus with a touch of olive oil!

Nicole K said...

We LOVE steak at our house. So much that I wrote a post about it not long ago! We usually get the cheap cuts, but we really like ribeye steaks. Prepared on the grill with some mesquite wood chips and a couple of sprigs of rosemary - scrumptious. I make roasted potatoes, onions and garlic to go with it OR grilled/roasted asparagus wrapped in bacon, depending on whether asparagus is cheap enough at the time.

We would certainly love to try out the Walmart steaks - especially with a gift card so we can get the "good" cuts! :-)

My favorite are steak tips cooked medium rare so that there is a little bit of juice that dribbles down your chin when u bite into one. It would have a side of summer squash sautéed in butter (this doesn't have to be healthy does it? Lol) with garlic salt and pepper and a small side of mom's homemade Mac and cheese. Accompanied with a glass of cheap white wine. The cheaper the better I prefer Walmart or box wine! On the deck of course in the summer.

Dear Hubby likes a Sirloin, prepped the same way as my Ribeye, only cooked well done. No mushrooms.

On the side I like to have a nice green salad, and some roasted potatoes and onions that are tossed with some olive oil, salt and pepper.

Dessert is usually a small dish of ice cream or an Italian Ice.

Okay, I am now officially hungry! :-)

I love steak! I love an easy salt, pepper and garlic steak, medium and mashed potatoes with chunky, mushroom, mushroom gravy!

I don't really understand much about steak cuts so I can't say. I'll take a good ol sirloin or tbone or skirt steak. I just like beef.

I don't have a grill so I always do them pan seared and that is fine with me.

When I was little I loved A-1 steak sauce, and still do but I learned meat is tasty by itself.

Corn on the cob is another favorite side with steak and finish it off with a fudge sundae with toasted coconut!

Mmm, that looks really yummy! I prefer to pan sear my steaks too. It takes the meat away from direct fire and coal fumes, and I can control the heat better. I think the longer the meat is left to cook, the better it tastes. Pairing the steak with fresh veggies and dip instead of a full-on salad is also a lot healthier, since the cream that goes into salads can be quite fatty.
