Annoying Habits

We just finished dinner and I'm snuggled up in my favorite chair with the laptop on my...well, lap. I am listening to Family Guy reruns in the background and waiting for 9pm to strike so I can meet my friend at the bookstore for coffee and chit chat. Sounds ideal huh? Minus the obnoxious cartoon in the background. ha!

You see, Mr. H will take the remote from me, change the channel and put it on something uber annoying. He'll watch it for about 15 minutes then head into the office to full around on the computer or he'll go to the garage to tinker and he leaves the remote on the couch across the room! That drives me batty. He does this ALL the time. Usually I jut ignore it because I'm reading blogs and it's just background noise, but I can't stand Family Guy's rude humor. Or a show about garage makeovers, or tow trucks or the Speed channel, or Vh-1's One Hit Wonders (for the umpteenth time).

My husband has horrible taste in television. It's not all bad but I've been subjected to some awful TV. And as I type this I'm watching Van Wilder's something or another. And the remote? Across the room on the couch far, far away from me (really it's only a few feet away from me but I'm lazy so it feels like miles). But despite this annoying habit, I love my husband and I vowed "for better or worse". And so I made him these pepperoni pizza puffs. They're like bite size pizzas baked into muffin pan. We had them for dinner with a side salad but I'd recommend them for appetizers too. They're kind of like pizza but puffy and a little like a quiche but loaded with pizza flavor. Feel free to make them with your favorite toppings.

Pepperoni Pizza Puffs adapted from Everyday with Rachael Ray and Cassie Craves

  • 3/4 cup flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
  • pinch of salt (my addition, optional)
  • pinch of red pepper flakes (my addition, optional)
  • 3/4 cup whole milk
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 cup cubed pepperoni
  • 1/2 cup store-bought pizza sauce

1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Grease a 24-cup mini-muffin pan. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, Italian seasoning, salt and red pepper flakes (if using) ; whisk in the milk and egg. Stir in the mozzarella, Parmesan and pepperoni; let stand for 10 minutes.

2. Stir the batter and divide among the mini-muffin cups. Bake until puffed and golden, 20 to 25 minutes.

3. Meanwhile, microwave the pizza sauce until warmed through. Serve the puffs with the pizza sauce for dipping.

NOTE: All my batter did not fit into the 24-mini muffin pan. So I made a full size muffin with the leftover batter. Some pans are larger than others so you may not have have an issue.

Hope you all have a great weekend!

Aw, these little pizza puffs are so cute and look delicious! And bless you for being so forgiving of bad TV :)

What an awesome idea. My kids would love these. Thanks!

I keep the remote control guarded by my side..lol If my husband wants to watch something, he has to return the remote to me when he is done..lol That sounds so mean, but he used to do the same thing all the time, and his choice of shows quite poor too.

I agree Family Guy is awful. My
16-year-old loves it. It is a very rude and obnoxious show.

These sound delicious and they are super cute! I like mini foods :)

thats funny on the bad tv, except I subject my boyfriend to many ridiculous shows like the bachelor so I cant really complain about his choice in tv...

OK, those look delicious!! I am a vegetarian, but I bet they would be amazing with the meat-free "pepperoni" as well!!! :) And PS. I totally agree with you on Family Guy. Terrible, terrible TV! haha!

You need to purchase a second remote. Keep it near your favorite chair. When you get up, shove it in the cushions.

WOW! that looks yummy!!!! I'm totally making them

I'd like to chime and mention annoying things my husband does, but he keeps fixing my laptop, so I guess that buys him a lot of leniency :) These little pizza puffs are da bomb!

Oh wow! I'm sitting here reading your blog right now while watching 'Memphis Beat' because my hubby left the remote in the chair across the room to go to bed (Not that the show is that bad...just not my choice.) He does it all the time! I think he has went to the bathroom, and then 30 min. later realize he's sawing logs :) Thanks so much for your yummy recipes! I was turned on to your site via Coupon Goddess. Such talent you have!

I could never make something that I know comes from Rachel Ray hahaha. They do look quite good, though! I love your shots of the ingredients.

You know when you're able to aguantar or deal with your partner's bad habits, that is true love.

If you cooked me pepperoni pizza puffs... I'd give you complete control of the remote! they look delicious!

Hey, Monica! I always visit your blog, but never comment.
Well, I love your recipes and pics. I created a delicious recipe with your yummilicious Coca-Cola cake and posted in my blog. If you can see, it's just to go to the Chocorango (in English).
But I already posted in the Portuguese Chocorango a time ago (http://chocorango.blogspot.com/2010/06/vaca-preta-do-alasca.html).
I really enjoyed the cake, we really can taste the Coca-Cola flavor!

Cheers,

Yum ..those little pizzas look good...this post reminded me of what my husband does continually...he unplugs the laptop to use it and NEVER plugs it back in..how hard is it??? 99% of the time I don't say anything but everyonce in a while....woooo..

Well my husband has been perfect the past few months. Has done nothing irritating. But then for the past few months he has been in Saudi Arabia! Wonder if there would be good just room temperature?

Patti said...

It's a husband thing..my husband has a habit of turning the tv to something nobody else wants to watch and then proceeds to fall asleep in his chair, remote in hand. *sigh

These pizza puffs look great! My kids would love them..much better than those darn frozen pizza rolls they insist on eating.

vanillasugarblog said...

these are something i will not make. noooooo. i would eat them all in one sitting. i love my pepperoni and cheese and dip so much. they look so good though.

Heather at Kitchen Concoctions said...

These look awesome! Perfect for movie night!

And I feel ya about the whole bad TV thing. My boyfriend also loves Family Guy (among other awful shows) and I cannot stand that show.

Ingrid_3Bs said...

Ha! My honey is a pain in the butt about the TV, too! I don't watch TV but will read in bed while he watches it. Sounds fine, right? NOOOO, he's a flicker, which means every time he changes the channel the volume either blares or gets low, then blares and gets low. How in the heck am I supposed to read like that? :)

I don't know if my honey would eat those, he's tries to stay away from carbs but my "bebe" kids sure would! I'm thinking there would be some serious bartering going on over them.

Btw, Is that pizza sauce you used good? The word spicy caught my eye! Love spicy. :)

Lori said...

Oh I am with you ALL THE WAY. I hate Family Guy and cant believe it is on at an hour when children can be exposed to it. Out tv barely leaves Public Television because of a lot of smut that is on regular tv.

As much as I love my husband he truly can drive me crazy with his really bad table manners, amongst other things.

Janet said...

You and I are married to the same man... Except for that mine is HISTORY obsessed! I tell him all the time that it's HISTORY; therefore, it is in the PAST and just to get him really good, I always tell him I can tell him what happens. After all, history is in the past! Ha ha

Your pizza puffs look amazing!

I like Family Guy. What I can't stand that my husband watches is all these "Man Soaps." Like Star Trek and Stargate. Bleh.

I do plan on making this recipe. Even has a cute name.

Sometimes it seems as though the remote is actually part of a man's hand..........hmmmm. bet I could get control of the remote if I made these though. Wish i could just pluck one off the plate!

I know what you mean its so annoying when someone starts watching a tv prog you're not interested in but put up with and then they walk out and leave it on grr.

These pizza bites look fab. I love finger food and dipping things into sauces. Yummy

Keeley said...

These look yummy! I made a similar recipe years ago. I know my hubby would inhale these, then ask "where's dinner?".

My husband only watches three things on tv: Phillies games, Maury, and Cheaters. He watches the local news, too. I'm starting to hate baseball because there are so many games! Love my husband, though.

Maria said...

These look so yummy! I love pizza! You can't get better than this! We don't really watch TV so I don't have this problem but The Hubble likes to turn the music on his laptop super loud while we are having computer time. I always have to ask him to turn it down. Annoying!

How annoying but I'm glad you love him and made these puffs and posted the recipe!! I have a confession to make. My husband watches almost no t.v. (soccer being the exception) and I get annoyed with him for not watching more with me. Maybe I'll go make him these pizza puffs and tell him they can only be eaten in front of the t.v.

Best,

Ooohhh. Love the idea of pizza in mini muffin form. What a great appetizer!

I don't watch a lot of tv, so I don't have issues with Jim and the remote. And in our house, it's Sam who likes to keep a close eye on the remote anyway. haha He drives us all crazy!

Hi Monica,

The Pepperoni Pizza Puffs look deelisshh! If I'm using a normal muffin pan, how long should I bake them for?

Thanks!

Suz

Monica H said...

Hi Suz- I only baked one full size muffin because I had a little leftover batter, but I don't remember how long it baked for. I do know that one muffin will cook in less time than a full batch so I hesitate to give you a number and have it be wrong. I would start checking them at the 20-25 minute mark, then start checking them every 3 minutes after that. Sorry I can't be more specific, but I hope you like them!

I don't remember how I got to your blog last week. Someone had to have put a link in their blog. This recipe looked good, so I stole it. I made it a bit more Weight Watcher friendly and just took them out of the oven. I really enjoyed them! They were crispy on the outside and quite yummy.

I wanted to share the recipe and I always want to give credit and it drove me bonkers that I couldn't find where I got it. I promised myself last time this happened that from now on I would put the name of the blog with the recipe!

I went through all my blogs and typed 'pizza puffs' in the search. No joy. I googled pizza puffs...too many hits. I finally thought Aha!!! I will type the whole last paragraph into google...about not fitting into the mini pan. And voila! Yours popped right up. Whew!

Anyway, looks like a ton of my blogger friends stole your recipe this week too!

Thank you so much for sharing.

Do you think your could freeze these and just reheat later? They look DELISH!

Monica H said...

3xMom- I'm pretty sure you could freeze them and just reheat them. I would suggest undertaking them by a minute or two just so that when you reheat them they don't dry out or get overdone.

Let me know how it turns out if you try it!

LovelyLush said...

Tried this recipe before, but they were a little too plain for me. I added double Italian seasoning and salt (I like a lot of flavor), I added some pepper jack cheese instead of Parmesan & used a mozzarella mix (Italian mixed bag from the grocery store). I also chopped up chives from the garden & sprinkled on top. Since I don't own a mini muffin pan, I'm using a pop-over pan (looks like a normal sized muffin pan) and a corn bread cast iron pan (looks like mini pizza slices). I'm also cooking for 30 minutes since the "puffs" will be larger. 15 minutes left, we'll see how good my take on this recipe is!

Tish said...

The pizza puffs are fab! I made them once last week and have had requests three times since (including from the neighbors kids, who ate some leftovers while visiting). Just wondering... Does it matter whether I use SR flour or AP flour (the recipe didn't specify)? If I use SR flour do I still need to use the baking powder? Thanks! -♥-

Monica H said...

Katy- The recipe calls for all-purpose flour. That's usually all I use unless the recipe states otherwise. FOr this recipe I would not use self rising flour just because I don't know how much they would puff in the oven. WHen you add the amounts shown for the AP flour and th ebaking soda then you at least know they'll be perfect every time.

Hope they turn out well for you. I just made them again last week with crumbled sausage and garlic and they were even better than the pepperoni version!

I made these pizza bites this weekend for my manfriend's surprise birthday dinner... with some adjustments. I made them vegetarian with sauteed baby bella mushrooms/onion/orange bell pepper, and I made my own dipping sauce. SO delicious. I know you could also subsitute some whole wheat flour to make them a little healthier. Very easy. Very tasty. Love this recipe!

I made some of these and they were AMAZING! They were quick and easy, as well. Would be a great party food!

Made these with veggies and turkey pepperoni! We used garlic butter alongside the pizza sauce! Big hit!

Sometimes I don't read a recipe and directions all the way through :( but this time it worked out! I made the batter for these and then merrily dumped the pizza sauce in as well! Baked them anyway, and oh my, they were delicious.

My mother used to make home-made pizza, and the sauce we used is just 1 can of tomato paste ixed with 1/2 cup of water and add oregano, garlic or other spices o yur choice.

How fun is this? These look perfect for a dinner on the run, or sack lunches. I bet I could adapt them to be more breakfast-ish, too! Awesome post!

Wow, didn't realize so many people hated family guy.. i personally think it's hilarious.. although i don't have children, so that's a different story, LOL.

This sounds soo good, and living with 2 boys sounds like it would go over well!! Thanks!

Did u buy the pepperoni cubed?

These look absolutely DELICIOUS and would be gobbled up as soon as they popped out of the oven if I made them for my husband! Great for football season :)

P.S. My husband also has bad taste in TV- I mean, why wouldn't he want to watch Real Housewives or Grey's Anatomy with me?! One of our favorite shows to watch together is Modern Family!

Reyhan said...

Oh my ! These look so good!

MrsHofy said...

Have you tried making these ahead of time and reheating them the day of a party? If so, how did that work out? Thanks in advance for any tips!!!

Anonymous said...

i tried this recipe. i felt the 1 tablespoon of Italian seasoning was too overpowering. i might try this again but with less Italian seasoning.

Anonymous said...

Tried this over the weekend and it didn't work for me at all. The bottoms were completely burned! I followed the directions exactly but they were simply inedible. About 15 minutes in they started smoking and smelled terrible.

Anonymous said...

I made this tonight and they are so delicious! I did trade the whole milk for skim (that's all I had in my fridge!!) and did sausage instead of pepperoni. They turned out great! Thanks for the recipe!

Elise said...

These are so good!

To those who were asking about gluten-free, I've made these with both my regular rice flour mix, and various flours that I've just kind of thrown together along with 1/4-1/2 a teaspoon of guar gum, and they've been great! I think this is a recipe that's hard to mess up. :)

Lucero De La Tierra said...

These look really good! Thanks Elise #147 for putting in your 2-cents about gluten free - we needed that so our DD could eat them. It's no fun when she has to go without.

Lucero De La Tierra said...

BTW, I also HATE Family Guy. My oldest learned the word b***h from that show when she was only 2 in a house where we try very hard to watch our language. The day she applied the word accurately, in her 2-yr-old mind, was not a good day.

Anonymous said...

I am interested in making these! Was wondering if you could make them and then bring them to a party or do they need to be served hot?

Anonymous said...

Made these tonight for my kids lunches. They heat up easily and quickly in the microwave or toaster oven.

I used 1/2 cup all purposes flour and 1/4 cup whole wheat. Worked out great!

Thanks for a great recipe!

What a great recipe! My kids loved them. My girlfriends and I started a food blog a couple months ago, and I adapted them for a post today. Hope that's ok! Let me know if I didn't go about that right. :) Love your blog!

These look so good, they are going to be made sometime soon in my household!

...and I actually love to watch family guy/american dad when I cook... haha.

Found these on Pinterest, and made them for dinner with salad last night. My husband & I are just big kids, and we loved them! Excellent for apps for a crowd; so yummy and easy to make.

Made these tonight. They were very tasty and easy to make. I didn't pay attention and mixed 1 c of milk with an egg. So I just changed everything to 1. I added more pepperoni and cheese than asked for and had just enough for the 24 mini muffins. They were crusty, perfect. Thank you for sharing

Love these pizza puffs and I'm sure my Husband will. As for Family Guy, yuck. My dh and I saved our marriage by watching tv in seperate rooms. lol Really, it works. Trish Butler

Sometimes I think that our dear hubbies are intentionally trying to slowly destroy us on the inside. There is a lot of research on this topic on other blogs, etc. Sometimes I can actually see the sinister thoughts in my husband's mind because he gives off a very strong aura around his head - usually a bright red or sometimes a burnt-sienna. I take that as a cue to make us some good comfort food so we can all take a couple deep breaths and just feel grateful for all of our blessings. These adapted pepperoni puffs are perfect - I plan on using them next time I get that "vibe". You are so right - better or worse - so much to be thankful for!!! Thank you. Bette

Hi from Canada. These look like a great recipe that maybe the wee grandsons would like. I had to laugh about the comments about your husband and the TV...as I am in my 40th year of marriage I know all about control of the remote and that "DAD" TV as my kids came to call it. I have no idea how he finds the programs that he wants to watch. Thank goodness for my laptop and Pinterest. Keep Blogging

I made these after work during a basketball playoff game for my bf and they were surprisingly quick and easy. I didn't have the exact cheeses so I mixed the bits of cheddar, parm, & mexican. I also subbed the pepperoni for lightly cooked bacon and it was delicious! I would def make this again! Thanks for the recipe!!!

Sn: I used to be annoyed by watching basketball every night but I'm getting used to it and even stating to enjoy it a bit.

Made these tonight for a baby shower. They are really easy to make and good!

Could I try to use my BabyCakes pop maker instead of baking them in the oven? Thanks for your consideration.

Thank you for listing what you changed from the original recipe -- lots say "adapted" but never say what they changed -- love that you did this.

HI there Monica!

I came across this recipe of yours not too long ago and gave it a shot over the weekend recently. I adapted and modified the recipe a little as we don't eat pepperoni at home. This is such a treasure, though! Love the recipe! :)

Hi Monica, my name is Chelsea and I am also a SAHM. I live in North Carolina but used to spend my summers in Central Texas (Wimberley area). I just stumbled upon this recipe on Facebook and was wondering if you have any other recipes that you would recommend for 2 & 3 year olds. My boys are 15 months apart and usually it's a struggle to get the food from their plates to their mouths. Thanks so much! :)

This recipe had wonderful flavour! I made it last night & doubled the recipe; it filled 1 regular (12 cup) cupcake pan & 2 mini (12 cup each) cupcake pans. I also added half of an onion, half each of a red & yellow pepper, an extra egg, slightly less milk (- ~.25 c), 1 tsp salt, .5 tsp garlic, .25 tsp pepper, .25 tsp crushed red pepper flakes, & half cheddar, half HP Jack instead of mozzarella.
Thanks for the recipe. I will definitely make these again.

Has anybody tried making ahead of time and freezing? I'd love to make these for my son's 1st birthday tailgate party in December, but since I'll need a lot, I'd love to try and pre-bake. Thanks!

Wow, I did not get 24 mini muffins out of this. I got 12! I will double the recipe next time.

I have never posted a comment before in all the pinterest that I've read, but I have to say that I think a support group is needed for all of us women with sticky fingered remote men! Thanks for the recipe, trying it soon!

Did anyone have trouble using muffin liners? Mine completely stuck to the liners and are impossible to eat. They are delicious, but I'm so disappointed that half the muffin is lost, sticking to the paper. Next time I will grease the pan and skip the liners. I was going to take these to a party and now I need to leave them at home. A warning in the recipe would be helpful.

My husband used to control the TV and so all we watched were war, military, westerns and sports. We fought about it and finally I had a belly full so I picked up a really heavy water goblet made back in the early 70's and threw it through the TV. There was glass all over
the place. I thought that if we didn't have a TV there would be no more fighting.Of course it didn't work. That was in 1972 and he still wants to watch TV now and there still is fighting.

I'm anxious to try this recipe.

Seems like a great recipe. I'll be making them tonight and bringing them with us tomorrow as we go work on building our new house... no electricity out there yet.
We don't have tv so that solves the remote problem... too much other stuff to do and tv costs $ lol.

These Pizza Puffs look fabulous and a recipe my young grand daughters will enjoy making and eating when they visit this summer. I am trying to teach them to cook a little. They are 10 and 9.

Having been married to the same man for almost 50 yrs, I can say that marriage requires, give and take, patience, forgiveness, acceptance, and a whole lot of true sacrificial love. We had remote problems, but solved it with everyone having their own. If I do not like what he watches, I go watch my show in the bedroom. Guys are not always smart about putting "garbage" on the recorders of their brains. I say " garbage in, garbage out". You become what you spend your time on. My hubby has a hearing loss, so wears a head set to hear the TV some times . If I do not like his program, we set the volume so low in the room so it does not bother me. My pet peeves are "Mythbusters", "Pawn shop", all the war, shooting , loud chaotic shows which he loves. The car repair shows, Pickers who go buy treasured junk out in the country to sell in their store, storage auction shows, and of course FOOTBALL. He watches all Sat and Sun during FB season. But we have learned to compromise too. As a Christian, I set my own boundaries as to what I hear and see. Bad taste is just that. We have decided we are better together than we would be apart and he does like my cooking! Hope he likes these puffs!

Thanks for sharing, Martha

I made these puffs to accompany dinner tonight and everyone in my family really enjoyed them. Since I didn't have a mini muffin pan I used a regular one, distributing the batter into all 12 cups and baking for 18 minutes. It worked great. I like the idea that they taste great at room temperature and the pizza flavor makes them kid friendly as well. I will take these to a bbq we are attending next week. I am sure they will be a hit. Thank you for a great appetizer recipe!

Anonymous said...

I made these according to your recipe mostly, but I used cheddar and chorizo instead of the cheese and meat you suggested. I also subbed italian seasoning for thyme and garlic powder; they were insanely good! My fiance ate them all and then wanted more.

Anonymous said...

I want to make these but here is the dilemma.

I'll be at an event from 9-5 these would be eaten after 5.

Im assuming I need to leave them in a cooler in the car..Does anyone know how they taste cold rather than room temp?

Monica H said...

They are best served warm or at room temp. It would be like eating leftover cold pizza if you serve them chilled. It's up to you!
