Goody Goody Gum Drops

I was hoping to post a new recipe today but it's been a hectic week and today is my in-laws 38th wedding anniversary. We invited them over to our home for dinner and cake so I've been busy. The cake is done, the rolls are rising, the dishes are washed and I'm tired!

Here are some pictures of what I did last night. I've always wanted to make and decorate a gingerbread house, but I don't really care for gingerbread so I've never done it. Every year I tell myself I'm going to do it and then I talk myself out of it. But I was visiting one of my favorite bloggers, Janet from Captain's Daughter To Army Mom, and she bought a Wilton premade kit that you just assemble and decorate. Her cottage was so cute so I got one!

The kit I bought from WalMart ($10) came with a pre-assembled house, royal icing mix, and candy. I bought the starlite mints and the cinnamon imperials separately and used dessicated coconut for snow. I think it turned out pretty cute.

It was pretty simple, albeit a little sticky. I think my icing was a little stiff, but before I noticed I had already put it in the bag. It worked out fine though. My favorite part are the Christmas tree in the window and the door mat. I also really like the way the "snow" looks. It was fun and I think I'd make another one next year. Or I could buy a bunch more this year and make a candy village!

If you're out doing some shopping this weekend you might want to check out the two books I wrote reviews on-- Confections Of A Closet Master Baker and Planet Cake.

Have a good weekend everyone!

  7. It turned out cute! I made one with my kids once...from scratch. It was a huge mess, kept slipping apart and we finally just looked at each other and started eating it. We had a blast...but, there was no house at the end.

  9. It turned out GREAT! I love how you have it set up on the table. (I like your penguins, too!)

Babygirl has one that she has started but yet to finish. It was a Wilton one but she had to put the house together which I think is why she hasn't finished.

Happy Anniversary to the original Mr & Mrs H! :)

  13. It's adorable, Monica, and really sweet used on your side table like that. I have to laugh to see how pretty and perfect it is. We also bought the Wilton house. Ours doesn't quite look like yours though, but it's on the center of the table too. I'll have to post a pic of it. LOL Makes me laugh just thinking about it.

  14. I am not a gingerbread fan either...I buy those premade kits every year and let my kiddos decorate. I need to buy one for myself this year because evry year they get so mad at me when I try to "help" them ;) Good job!

  17. Every year I buy one of those packages (plus more cute candy) and Emma decorates it. But this year, my sources--Trader Joe's and Costco--didn't carry them. We are totally disappointed!

  20. Wow! For someone who's never done this, you did a great job. It's all so colorful and festive. Me? I haven't put up one ornament, yet. I'm on Winter Break next week (two weeks) so I hope to catch up on all that, and to get busy blogging more often.

  24. Aww, how fun! We always made gingerbread houses growing up - they were graham crackers glued onto on 1/2 gallon orange juice containers with icing. I can't wait to make them with our (future!) kiddos!
